Welcome to the 12th edition of the Island Art & Soul calendar, a collection of contemporary Caribbean fine art printed on archival acid-free paper sutiable for framing. We hope you will enjoy this selection of tropical images for years to come. The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, Inc., the publisher of this calendar, is now living up to its name, showcasing art and artists in diverse artistic fields from all over the Caribbean region in a lively hub of activity. In 2003, thanks to agenerous benfactor, CMCArts acquited a 6,500 square-foot historic building in downtown Fredericksted, St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands, to be used as teh museum center. An extensive restoration project was scheduled to be completed by the end of 2005. When finished, the museum center will consist of 3000 square feet of gallery areas, a gift shop, administrative office, two apartments for artists-in-residence, two artist studios, six bathrooms, storage and utility areas and a 5,500 square-foot courtyard complete with butterfly garden. A permanent collection of fine art will be the core of the Museum. We are honored that Gerardo Mosquera has agreed to be a curatorial advisor. A Cuban art curator and critic, Mr. Mosquera is internationally renowned. he is currently curator of the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City. We also have on board a highly qualified professional full-time staff, including an executive director and assistant director. The first in a series of artists-in-residence, Tony Monsanto of Curacao, has completed a two week wrokshop in drawing and painting for adults and children. The programs started during the restoration process have multiplied to include classes in Life Drawing; Clay hand building, figure sculpting and coil pots for children, youth and adults; Ceramics; Print-making; and Commercial Photography. All-day field trips for school groups have started. Meanwhile, exhibits change frequently. Recent shows have featured a talented local high school Congressional art competition winner, two St. Croix -based digital photographers and a group show of U. S. Virgin Islands painters. The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts is well on its way to fulfilling its dream of providing a vital museum center serving the adults and children of the entire Caribbean. We are grateful for generous donors, a dedicated board of directors, accomplished staff, enthusiastic volunteers, talented teachers, eager students and the many visitors who enjoy what we offer. Our sponsors, volunteers, and supporters are responsible for keeping the calendar project alive. Please support them as they support our dreams and goals. Enjoy our artists and their art. Frame your favorites and hang them in your homes or offices, or give them as gifts to others. Thank you, each and everyone who has supported the dream. |
